I read an amazing book in one day this weekend. It is an amazing story told by an amazing woman and sent to me in amazing circumstances. Imaculee Ilibagiza is a Rwandan woman hunted by her friends and neighbors during the Tutsi genocide in 1994. She lived for 91 days in a 3x6 bathroom with 6 other women and never made a sound. Her family was massacred in the most horrible way by people she knew and trusted. Her story of finding faith in the most unimaginable circumstances has changed me.
Imaculee is a hero for me, not because of what she has endured; for that, I consider her a remarkable woman. She is a hero for me because she has shown me the power of belief and faith. I am a show-me person and Imaculee is, too. Through her story, I have learned about faith and I am a believer. Faith for her, is in whom she calls God. Faith for others may be in Buddah, Spirit or Source Energy. I believe it is all the same.
No matter what you believe to be the higher power in your life, know it is there. Know that if you tap into it your life will change. It can be scary to dip your feet into the pool of higher power. I sense that is directly due to the associated thoughts of organized religion. I know that a lot of people label themselves based on their religious practices. For me, that is all irrelevant. I am searching for truth about the universal, and organized religion is not universal.
On page 114, I read a passage of the book that reinforced what I have been believing for so long. Imaculee said that she realized that "At first I was expecting Him, God (which is her name for the higher power in her life), to show me my entire future all at once-maybe with a flash of lightning and a clap of thunder thrown in for good measure. But I came to learn that God never shows us something we aren't ready to understand. Instead, He lets us see what we need to see, when we need to see it. He'll wait until our eyes and hearts are open to Him, and then when we're ready He will plant our feet on the path that's best for us... but it's up to us to do the walking."
Oh, the ring of truth for me!!!! I always tell people that it won't just fall into your lap and it isn't about just thinking good thoughts. It's about taking action and being ready for the opportunity by becoming the person you need to be in order to be ready when the opportunity comes.
If you have ever doubted the notion that a higher and greater good is there and ready for your success, then read Left To Tell by Imaculee Ilibagiza. If you can hear her message of hope and faith in this story, you will realize how fortunate you are not to need to live through a holocaust in order to get what you want from life. She is such an inspiration. I feel as though I owe her for making me a better person. I can't wait to meet her!
